I am excited to share with you the several enhancements that we’ve made to NACUBO’s flagship publication and its website, www.businessofficermagazine.com. Because NACUBO is committed to embracing sustainability, the magazine will now publish bimonthly.
More Ideas and Perspectives
Each issue will include an increased number of articles that not only address the current challenges and emerging issues in higher education finance and administration, but also provide you with practical tips and strategies for effectively leading your institutions.
The “Big Idea”—a new addition in each issue—is a thought-provoking article that provides dynamic perspectives on a timely topic or conversation in higher education. In this issue, “Future Ready” highlights ways that campus leaders are preparing their institutions to succeed in the face of changes and challenges in the coming decade. “Even as leaders take stock of possible threats and find ways to recession-proof their campuses, they must carve out new areas of growth and opportunity to fulfill their institution missions,” writes author Karla Hignite.
The accompanying “Idea in Brief” section succinctly highlights the major takeaways from the article.
“Post-Calamity Planning” highlights how a natural disaster can add another layer of complication to an institution’s mission to deliver value to students. Gulf Coast State College in Panama City, Fla., is still recovering from the lingering impacts of Hurricane Michael—a Category 5 storm that struck the Florida Panhandle in October 2018.

In addition to presenting highly relevant content in each issue, the Business Officer website will showcase online-exclusive content that you can access from your desktop, tablet, or smartphone. The website’s offline feature allows you to download articles and read them anywhere—with or without the internet.

Kania, who received the 2019 Service to NACUBO Award in recognition of his numerous contributions to the association. Kania explains the importance of supporting collaboration with colleagues to generate ideas that power institution missions.
You can also find “A Good Offense,” which reveals how Delaware State University, a public land-grant, historically black university in Dover, has created strategies to meet student and employer needs—something that all institutions strive for.
As you peruse this issue, you will notice that the magazine also has a new aesthetic. Our aim was to make the design fresh, with pages that are more vibrant and inviting, and for the refresh to allow for a more streamlined experience.
