Three decades after adopting responsibility centered management, institutions continue to evaluate its benefits and complexities.

With continued declines in state funding, ever-changing enrollment demographics, and public cries for price reduction, public institutions continue to look to responsibility centered management (RCM) as an accountability solution that can shore up financial viability.

The first of two articles, “RCM Reality Check” provides a research perspective on the efficacy of RCM, revealing strengths and challenges and offering implementation recommendations that parallel the journey taken by Auburn University, Auburn, Ala., as described in the accompanying case study, “The Road to RCM.”
